Media Monday

Beginning at 2:11am, Monday morning, AMC will begin replaying the series Breaking Bad from the beginning. The episodes will be in order. All of this leads up to the return of this season's premier.

This series is about an underpaid chemistry teacher, Walt, who discovers he is dying of lung cancer. He has a son with special needs and a new baby on the way. His policeman brother-in -law inadvertantly gives Walt the idea of using his chemistry expertise to make meth and some quick money for his families' future.

This is a well written drama that weaves its characters and storyline together week after week and year after year.

I encourage you to set your DVR and watch this show. It is well written and well acted. Then you will be all ready for the new season.

Last weekend everyone was here for a get together for Michelle and Cora. So, of course, there are some photographs of the weekend. It was fun filled and a big thank you goes out to Shannon for hosting everyone all weekend. I am going to try not to put in too many photos.

Cutie Patootie Lucy
Ava waited patiently for someone to swim with her. Keep in mind I think this is about 9:30 in the morning.

Ava and Lucy held baby Cora.

Lucy and her dad, Jacob. It is not easy to get a photograph of either of them. They are elusive.

Scarlett learned to hula hoop.

Scarlett working on her tuck for the 2020 Olympics.

Ben lost another tooth.

Brett and Shannon adopted a dog, Spree.

Michelle inside while everyone else is swimming. Welcome to your new life, Michelle.

It is amazing how well a three year old can drive.
Stopping is not as much fun though.

Believe it or not, I did keep the photographs to a minimum. (for me)

TAFKAB is Back!

I believe I have mentioned before that the toothpaste in the sink drives me crazy. So this morning I left Barry a plea.

When I came back in there was a message to me.

It says, " This is art. Don't stifle me. TAFKNAB"

So, I'm leaving it there.

Sometimes It Sucks to be the Old Fart

A TRIBUTE TO BONNIE

I'm not feeling very humorous today, so I ask that you indulge me this moment.  You see, we had to say good-bye to our sweet Bonnie today.  The cutest little West Highland White Terrier you've ever seen.

A little over 10 years ago, at the same time that our daughter was pregnant with our first grandchild, my wife and I thought we needed a puppy.  Don't ask me why we made that decision at that point in our lives...at times we thought we were crazy.  But, we have loved every moment that precious pup blessed our lives.

Bonnie was the smallest pup of the litter, but without a doubt she had the most personality.  I can still see her "mixing it up" with her brothers and sisters over a toy, and she won!  That's when my wife and I looked at each other and simultaneously said, "That's the one!"

Shortly after we got her home we took her to see Dr. Barry Brier (the best Vet anywhere) for her first check-up.  That's when Bonnie was diagnosed with a chronic kidney disease, and we were told that she probably wouldn't live more than half the average life span for a dog of her type.  But, because of Barry's early diagnosis and treatment plan, Bonnie beat the odds.  And, beat them by a bunch.

However, I don't want to talk about her disease.  I want to talk about the love and joy she brought to us, and everyone else she came in contact with.  So, my notes below may seem a little disjointed, and may not be very well written, but they are my memories of Bonnie Jo Lucky Love Puppy Princess Oler.  That's a big name for a little dog and there's a story behind each name, but I won't go into those.

Some of my favorite Bonnie stories:

  • When she was really small she would run around the house at about 90 MPH and then slide on her stomach across the floor and end up under a gray leather hassock and all you could see was her little black button nose.

  • When we were house breaking her, I hung a bell off the door knob of the back door.  The idea was that she would ring the bell when she needed to go "tee time."  It worked pretty well, but you needed to make sure you let her stay out long enough after she rang the bell.  There are some things that just can't be rushed and if you tried to rush her you might find a surprise in the house.

  • I'll never forget the time that she got through the fence in the back yard, walked along the edge of the retaining wall, until it was safe for her to jump, then she would take off across the golf course.  She lead me on more than one merry chase down the Oak Course of Walnut Creek and around our neighborhood.  And, she would only be caught when SHE was ready to be caught.

  • Whenever we had guests at our house, Bonnie was sure they came to visit her.  Being the great hostess that she was, she'd get her favorite toy and persistently ask each of them to play with her.  She would not be ignored.

  • When she wanted to take a nap, she would look for the softest place she could find on the sofa or one of the chairs.  The more pillows the better.  She looked just like the Princess and the Pea.

  • At night when I would go to bed, Bonnie would follow.  She would lay on the bed while I took my shower.  When I crawled into bed, she would jump up, run to the den, get her favorite toy, come back to bed and want to play.  It would only take about two or three throws and fetches of the toy before she would be ready to settle down and go to sleep.

Bonnie thought her mission in life was to protect her pack (the three of us) from squirrels and birds.  And she was always on the case.  But, her real mission was to bring immeasurable love and joy.  This she did, unconditionally.

Today, 4 June 2012, at 11:30AM, someone in heaven was in need of a little white puppy, and God picked our Bonnie.

(Note from Jan:) Bonnie was a terrific little dog. We spent a lot of time with her, and she was precious. It was always so much fun to see how much joy she brought Pat and Jennifer. She will be missed.

Tech Tuesday- the Split Keyboard

If you like to use your thumbs to type, you might wish to split your keyboard. You can do this with the iOS5 upgrade on your iPad (this doesn't work on the iPhone). To get the split keyboard, simply place two fingers on the keyboard and move them outwards to split the keyboard in half. To put the key board back together, touch and hold the keyboard key until it says 'dock and merge'.

I also received a question about photos on iPhone. The question concerned finding photos on your iPhone by the dates they were taken. There are no dates on iPhone photos. So the answer is you cannot look them up by dates on your iPhone.

Media Monday- JoeOntheTube Returns!

I’m a sucker for classic literature retold in a modern setting.  If you replace the swords and horses in Romeo and Juliet with guns and cars, or take Odysseus off the boat and put him in the 1930’s Depression era South escaping from prison it’s a guarantee that I’ll be the first in line to see it.  So when I heard about the new fall show Revenge on ABC which was a retelling of one of my favorite books, The Count of Monte Christo I was excited.  I’m sorry to say that Revenge had its last episode of the season this past week, but I thought that by writing this I could encourage you to catch up over the summer when there is nothing else worth watching on anyway.

If you’ve never read the original source material, The Count of Monte Christo (TCOMC), don’t let that deter you from watching this show.  In a nutshell, TCOMC is the story of a poor man wrongfully accused of treason and sent to prison by a rich and powerful family to cover up the fact that they were actually guilty of said treason.  In jail he plots his revenge and is educated by an old priest who also tells him the location of a vast fortune.  Upon his escape he retrieves the fortune and assumes the false identity of the fictitious Count of Monte Christo.  He then uses this vast fortune to exact revenge on those that wronged him.

Revenge follows a very similar storyline to TCOMC, it is the story of a young woman, Emily Thorne who’s father was framed for terrorism by a rich and powerful family the Grayson’s.  As a young girl Emily is sent away to numerous detention facilities and forgotten for the most part, only to be released at 18 and to find out she has inherited a huge fortune.  She assumes the identity of jet setting rich girl Amanda Clarke and becomes intertwined with the Grayson’s lavish lifestyle while plotting her revenge.  The twists come fast and furious the deeper she gets and the harder it becomes to separate her two identities.

I haven’t said this yet, but let me make it clear, Revenge was the best show on TV last year.  It’s the type of show that hasn’t been around since Lost went off the air (If you didn’t like Lost, don’t worry, these two stories couldn’t be farther apart) full of mystery, excitement, romance, and plain old great story-telling.

It’s coming back in the fall so do yourself a favor and catch up on Revenge this summer on ABC.com or HULU.  You will be glad you did, JoeOnTheTube promises.

Updates

1. As far as we know the baby titmouse is just fine. After he dried off, he flew away.

2. The baby bluebirds are getting ready to fledge. I have a photo of one peaking his head out of the house. I am just too lazy to download it off my camera.

3. Thank you, Alice, for your support of my post. It was fun to read that comment to Barry.

3. All the kids and grand kids will be around this weekend. You have been forewarned for some upcoming family photos, I am sure. As a warm-up here are a couple.

Baby Cora

Baby Cora would rather sleep in our arms (or at least that's what I tell myself.)

4. Enjoy your weekend and the beginning of June!
